Daumenlutschen als Ursache der Nasenscheidewandverbiegung (Septumdeviation) H. Hein: Fortschr. Med. 90 1g. (1972), Nr. 16 Translation by Erhard Thiele Apr.2006: Thumb sucking as a cause for septum deviation Summary: On the basis of observations of sucking habits, jaw malformations, palatal arch forms and nasal septum deviations on 400 boys and 400 girls in school starting age it was stated, that there are very frequently existing connections, especially with children being active suckers at the examination time (89 boys = 22 resp.23,5%). Thus there are not only deformations of teeth bearing maxillary segments with long lasting thumb suckers occurring in a high frequency , but even particular deformations of the hard palate and a subsequent and forced deforming of the nasal septum standing on top. The consequences of this malposition, up to now seen as a growth anomaly, are well known, and the health restriction is not only significant for the individual but for the public at large. Prophylaxis and prevention are manageable by substitutes as pacifiers, which have to be administered early in the first months of life, when they will then be accepted. The habit to suck such pacifiers mostly ends after the forth year. Intensive instruction and warning of the parents is necessary not only to avoid the well known dental defects, but as well the septum deviation and its consequences. From the 89 still actively sucking boys 34 (=46,3%) showed a definite deviation, from the 126 girls 44 (40%).
