This comprehensive and intensive training course prepares participants in the assessment, examination, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation processes of treating orofacial myofunctional disorders and the neuromuscular, bio-adaptive aspects of functional and parafunctional behaviors. Course topics include the orofacial environment, dentition, periodontium, temporomandibular joint and musculature, along with their inter-relationship to total health and well-being. The course focus includes instruction on both the clinical protocols and techniques utilized in treating orofacial myofunctional disorders, establishing correct functional patterns and eliminating parafunctional behaviors. Interactive course sessions provide enhanced opportunities for learning through a variety of teaching methods. The impact of function on the bio-adaptability of the orofacial environment, TMJ region, and overall body musculature is included through hands-on learning sessions. The course includes reviewing the neuro-anatomy and physiologic processes contributing to orofacial muscular dysfunction and their affect on systemic health. Interdisciplinary approaches to maintaining periodontal health, eliminating abfraction potential, eliminating parafunctional habits, interceptive muscular along with growth and development facilitation issues are discussed along with digit sucking elimination and functional speech movement patterning issues. This International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and American Speech Hearing-Language Association (ASHA) approved course exceeds the Level I course content prerequisites necessary to apply for the Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM) examination process administered by the IAOM.

As a result of this learning activity the participant will be able to:

Discuss the process to become Certified in Orofacial Myology and the IAOM Code of Ethics

Review anatomical & neuro-physiologic orofacial development and functional patterning

Assess airway issue interferences, orthodontic interventions & relationships to OMD treatment

Discuss dental occlusion classifications, frenum assessment & frenectomy, & appliance therapies

Formulate an orofacial myofunctional diagnosis

Understand oral and behavioral principles & techniques for eliminating bruxism/clenching & ROM deviations

Relate practice management strategies to practice building and promotion of an OMD practice

Analyze the insurance coding & nomenclature process for submission of OMD claims

Evaluate data collection forms, calibration of measurement taking and DentalWriter software

This comprehensive intensive training experience provides didactic and clinical knowledge regarding assessment, examination, implementation of therapeutic techniques, and evaluation skills applicable to licensed practitioners particularly in the professional areas of dental hygiene/dentistry, orofacial myology, orthodontics, otolaryngology, pediatrics, periodontics, and speech therapy. Course size is limited.

Airports: Daytona International Airport is the closest. Sanford Orlando International airport is approximately a 90 minute drive from Port Orange. The shuttle is approximately $55.00-$75.00 for round trip between the Orlando airport and the LaQuinta Hotel in Port Orange.
